From 24–26 June 2026, learner leaders from across South Africa gathered at the ANEW Hotel & Convention Centre, OR Tambo for the National Learner Leadership Summit, where they were challenged to become champions of democratic participation, safe and inclusive schools, and active citizenship.
The Summit reinforced the importance of empowering young people to address challenges such as bullying, violence, misinformation and substance abuse through purposeful, values-driven leadership.
The Summit’s focus closely aligned with the NECT’s commitment to developing learner leadership through strategic partnerships. By working with the Department of Basic Education, private sector partners and youth-led organisations, including Representative Council of Learners (RCL) structures, NECT is expanding opportunities for young people to strengthen their leadership skills and contribute meaningfully to their schools and communities.
These partnerships enable greater reach and collective impact, ensuring more learner leaders have access to platforms that promote civic participation, strengthen school governance and nurture the next generation of ethical leaders.
As South Africa continues to invest in learner leadership, collaboration remains key. Through convening partners and supporting youth-led initiatives, NECT continues to help create an enabling environment where young people are equipped to lead with confidence, purpose and lasting impact.
