In today’s rapidly evolving world, it is essential that learners are equipped with the knowledge, values, and competencies required to navigate complex personal and societal challenges. In alignment with this vision, the Department of Basic Education (DBE), in collaboration with the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), officially launched the Life Skills and Life Orientation textbook series for Grades 4 to 12, on the 13th June 2025.
The launch, held during Youth Month, emphasised the importance of empowering the youth to become active, informed, and responsible citizens. The textbooks form part of the At the Crossroads initiative, which began in 2017 with the aim of developing nine high-quality, open-source textbooks aligned to CAPS. The initiative also seeks to advance competency-based education to better prepare learners for the demands of the 21st century.
“The At the Crossroads textbook series truly empowers our learners to connect with their futures and make a positive difference in their own lives and in society,” said Deputy Minister of Basic Education, Dr Reginah Mhaule, in her keynote address.
She further highlighted the critical role the series plays in guiding learners to make informed decisions on key areas such as health, safety, nutrition, mental well-being, sexuality, physical fitness, and technology use. The books also support the development of emotional intelligence, healthy relationships, and an understanding of civic responsibilities grounded in South Africa’s laws and Constitution.
The development of the textbook series was made possible through the invaluable support of partners including Eskom, Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), South African Human Rights Commission, Road Accident Fund, Railway Safety Regulator, ESKOM Foundation, the South African Sugar Association, Momentum Metropolitan Holdings, UNICEF, and Nestlé.
“This momentous occasion reflects the commitment and resilience of all partners who formed part of the steering committee. I would like to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this textbook series,” said NECT CEO, Dr Godwin Khosa.
The Life Skills and Life Orientation textbooks represent a significant milestone in advancing a responsive and inclusive curriculum that speaks to the real-life needs of South African learners, today and into the future.
